Large skies and a ferry trip

The wide open spaces of the north of Scotland give grand and impressive skies when the weather relents and the rain stops. Perhaps in fact these skies result as much from the variable and unpredictable weather itself as from the character of the landscape. Either way, it is one of the pleasures of visiting this area for me.

I've taken many photos over the years but for this post, I've chosen five favourites from this trip. The first was taken on the beach at St Cyrus on the Aberdeenshire coast last week.

Then there are three from the Orkney Islands during the brief spell of warm sunny weather of the last three days (how lucky we've been).

The final photo shown was taken last Saturday in John O' Groats on the Scottish mainland just before we boarded the ferry to Orkney.

    1. It is indeed wonderful - so much to relish and discover. I will post again tomorrow when I've had time to digest the delights of the last few days.

  2. Beautiful skies !
My 2xgrandparents were born in Scotland (him) and the Orkneys (her) and any chance of seeing their homeland is especially delightful ... thanks for the look through your photos ;)

    1. There will be more glimpses to share. Today we've seen a Neolithic village, a large house with its origins in the 17th century and an amazing small (but exceptional) art gallery featuring 20th and 21st century works. If you have never been to Orkney, it is a must!

  3. Occasionally I spot a cloud formation similar to the one in the third pictures, except instead of thin lines going one direction, there are lines going both ways in a crosshatch. I've thought about trying to capture that in my fiber work but then think no one would believe me that there are crosshatch clouds. And of course, I never have a camera on me the few times I've seen them.

    1. Ah ... It's always a problem having a camera when you need it. Even a mobile phone needs to be charged!
