Stitching Black and White

While I was on holiday in Scotland, I began stitching an appliqué version of my black and white Cotswold crafts idea.

I have in my mind the watermill buildings of Stroud with their chimneys, the red cloth dyed there and then spread out to dry in the fields, the limestone walls to be found all around here, and the undulations of the Cotswold Hills.

While I think how to develop things - especially, how large to make the next version and how to display it, here are some previews ...

... with running stitch ...

... with seeding in black and grey ...

... and with seeding in red ...

Doing this preliminary stitching has been very helpful so I will continue to work on the sample to try out some other thoughts ...

I have a feeling this may become work in a series. I have lots of other ideas ...

  2. i'm enjoying the curved lines of stitch over the hard lines of cloth. certainly feels like a series. would look great as small pieces side-by-side.

    1. Hi Monica and thanks very much or your comments. Small pieces side-by-side are certainly a possibility - also a concertina book, maybe. They are for a particular exhibition venue with tricky hanging requirements ... which always give pause for thought....

  3. Concertina book may be the way to go. I've never stitched like this but I love the effect especially the red. I'm finding your blog is full of inspiring ideas.

    1. .. and I yours - especially the curtains piece. The concertina book does look like an idea to go with in some form though I'll have to give thought to the technical issues - like where paper and fabric meet to get it tidy and without fuss or distracting the eye ... always things to think about.
